I have thought long and hard about what could have planted this tree into this other tree. Since taking this photo i got a biology degree in natural science, I realized i don't know enough about the complexities of the northern California rainforests to be sure, but I assume it was probably the workings of a woodpecker. Woodpeckers are known for stuffing food into holes in trees to save food over winter.
