King of the Bison

This bull bison was rutting and made a sound that seemed to shake the frame of my van, even from 30 meters away. I was very nervous but crawled out my window onto the roof to get this image of him surrounded by his favorite females. Nothing makes you feel small like the sound of a 2000lb bison telling you to stay away.
Montana's Bison Range was established in 1908 to help Bisons whose populations were nearly decimated by the American settlers and homesteaders. It was among the first land set aside to protect the bison populations, about 30 years after Yellowstone was established. What an amazing place to see, I am so thankful for our public lands.
